Our objective is to be the best state-owned workplace and a pioneer in occupational well-being.
The objective of the Finnish Transport Agency is to be an excellent workplace for competent people. In order to promote that objective, a Best Workplace development project has been carried out in the Finnish Transport Agency in 2014–2016. The Best Workplace project consists of four entities which are the development of occupational well-being, work that is independent of time and place, the development of intelligent mobility, and the development of cooperation.
The case example below presents the pilot project on work that is independent of time and place. The sustainability report and the personnel account (in Finnish) contain more information on tasks related to the personnel.
Positive feedback received on the pilot project on work that is independent of time and place
The Finnish Transport Agency received great feedback on the experiment on work that is independent of time and place, that is remote work. The objective of the remote work pilot was to improve the flexibility of working life in which the reconciliation of work and private life is taken into consideration while the productivity of work is also emphasised.
The courage to trial working that is independent of time and place has paid off. Employees have felt that the efficiency and quality of their work have improved during the experiment. In particular, the employees consider that work requiring concentration is easier when they work remotely. As a result of a more peaceful working environment, it is easier to stay concentrated and there are not as many interruptions as at the office. Although the benefits of remote work are undeniable, remote work does not necessarily suit all work duties. For example, team work is usually more functional when people gather into one place.
Based on the feedback received on the experiment, more efficient working is only one of the benefits of increased freedom. Many have found that the experiment has made the reconciliation of work and private life easier. This is beneficial for both the employees as well as the employer.
Working that is independent of time and place is based on trust and responsibility. Based on the positive experiences obtained from the experiment, the remote work guideline of the Finnish Transport Agency was renewed and a new flexible remote work model was adopted by the agency. Everyone at the agency may work remotely if the nature of their work allows it.
