Pilotage in the Saimaa Canal and Lake Saimaa

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels, with the exemption of vessels with a length of less than 35 metres.

The Finnish Transport Safety Agency can, on application, grant the master of the vessel the right to navigate in the Saimaa Canal or Lake Saimaa in certain pilotage sections when the master has passed the required exam and received a Pilot Exemption Certificate. Finnpilot is responsible for the pilotage in the canal and in the Saimaa watercourse.

Compulsory pilotage on Russian territory

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels between the island Vihrevoi and the Brusnitchnoe lock. When arriving from the Gulf of Finland pilotage must be ordered from the Inflot Vyborg Department 12 hours prior to the arrival at the pilot boarding place and the order must be confirmed four hours before the pilotage begins.

It is important to pay attention to the accurate time for the beginning of the pilotage, especially in the final reports, so that the Pilot Order Service can be spared unnecessary work and delays of vessels avoided.
