Information on the Saimaa Canal locks

The Saimaa Canal is open for boaters 24 hours a day. The canal is 42.9 km long; 23.3 km situated on the Finnish and 19.6 km on the Russian side of the border. The head from Lake Saimaa to the Gulf of Finland is, on average, 75.7m and there are eight locks with heads from 5.5 to 12.7m.

The maximum vessel size permitted is: length 82.5m, beam 12.6m, draught 4.35m and height of mast 24.5m.

VHF ch 9 (Saimaa VTS) and ch 11 (locks)

1. Brusnitchnoe Lock

Brusnitchnoe is the first lock when approaching from the sea. Head 10.0m. Floating bollards along the eastern wall of the lock. Sights: memorial to the constructors of the Saimaa Canal.
Overnight stay: in front of the pilot station (up the lock)

2. Iskrovka Lock

Head 11.4m. Mooring and waiting on the western side but forbidden on the eastern side of the upper and lower waiting harbour. Floating bollards along the western wall. Remote-controlled from Brusnitchnoe Lock.

3. Cvetotchnoe Lock

Head 5.5m. Mooring and waiting behind the quay but forbidden on the eastern side of the lower waiting harbour. Floating bollards along the western wall.
Remote-controlled from Brusnitchnoe or Mälkiä.

4. Ilistoe Lock

Head 10.2m. Mooring and waiting on the eastern side of the waiting harbour but forbidden on the western side of the lower waiting harbour. Floating bollards along the eastern wall. Remote-controlled.

5. Pälli Lock

Head 11.7m. Mooring and waiting forbidden on the eastern side of the lower waiting harbour. Floating bollards along the western wall.
The border between Finland and Russia runs through Lake Nuijamaa. On the northern shore there is a customs station for persons entering Finnish territory. Quay with 1.8m draught. Mooring for boats with a draught exceeding 1.8m, behind the quay for cargo vessels.

5B. Kansola Bascule Bridge

6. Soskua Lock

7. Mustola Lock

Head 12.4m. Boaters approaching from Lake Saimaa should request lockage. The phone at the entrance to the canal may be used. Floating bollards along the eastern wall. Remote-controlled.
Sights: Old lock from 1856 on the eastern side and Canal Museum about 200m from the lock.

Saimaa VTS
Saimaa VTS is situated in a building by the Lock. Open 24h a day.

Moving into a lock
Please move into the lock as soon as green light is signalled. When several boats are locked simultaneously, the larger boats move to the floating bollards and the smaller ones to the sides of the larger ones.
