Domestic freight traffic

The total volume of goods transported by lorries in road transport in Finland was 274 million tonnes, while the transport performance amounted to 20.3 billion tonne-kilometres. Most of the transports are generated by construction (soil and products for the construction industry), the food cluster (agricultural products and foodstuffs) and the forest industry (wood-based raw materials and forest products).

In 2014, the total volume of goods transported by rail was 37 million tonnes, while the transport performance amounted to 9.6 billion tonne-kilometres. Railway transports serve the forest, metal and chemicals industry, as well as the transit traffic. The upturn in the mining industry has had a visible impact on transports. The key types of goods are forest products and wood-based raw materials.

In 2014, the total volume of goods in waterborne transport was 5.5 million tonnes, of which oil products constituted 3.4 million tonnes and raw wood products 1.2 million tonnes. In waterborne traffic, the transport performance amounted to 2.3 billion tonne-kilometres.
