Turku Radio

Pursuant to the Act on Rescue Service at Sea, the Finnish Transport Agency is responsible for safety radio communications in Finnish territorial waters and for distress radio communications in the deep channels of the Saimaa waterways system.

Turku Radio is responsible for the transmission of safety radio messages, including navigational warnings, weather forecasts and ice reports.

Turku Radio also ensures distress radio communications in the Finnish territorial waters and assists icebreakers by transmitting vessel and route information.

Turku Radio receives reports on defective aids to navigation around the clock.

Saimaa VTS handles the distress and safety communications in the deep channels of the Saimaa waterways system.

Equipment 18 VHF base stations along the Finnish coast from Kemi to Virolahti, of which 15 equipped with Turku Radio VHF duplex channels.

Nationwide VTS traffic image, user equipment for icebreaker assistance IBNET, a comprehensive AIS traffic image and a message transmission service.
 

For routine and distress calls the VHF stations have DSC channel 70, and for the sectors a duplex working channel and simplex channels.
